ME: an interview.
what are you?
i'm a model / artist / creator. i do a lot of everything, and i think creator or maker is most accurate for what i do. but what i am is more broad… i think beyond what i do, i'm a seeker of life.
what does that mean, seeker of life?
that i seek enjoyment, pleasure, challenge. the things that create experiences and make you most present while living. that's all you really should be in life no?
what does being an artist mean to you?
well, first it means that i produce art, or things rather. it's actually very central to who i am because i've been creative my entire life. i started viewing myself as an 'artist' very young, drawing, painting, making. so i think i've gone my entire life with that label on me both from outside sources and from within. its interesting because now i feel like it doesn't exactly fit who i am but there isn't really a better term? creative is becoming a little contrived now, and i do, in fact, make art so i guess artist fits at the end of the day. deeper meaning, i think it means releasing parts of me into the world. i love the impermanence of art, always have. i've been gifting / giving away my art ever since i was a child and i love it. it's like releasing a piece of beauty i made into the ether of someone else's life. i also have pieces that no one but me have seen… i'll work on something and throw it away-- that's also impermanence. hah.
do you remember the first piece you made?
definitely not. I can't even remember some of the pieces i made within the past year. it was probably a drawing or messy painting. my parents always gave us art supplies. i am the youngest so i lucked out with that i guess; early access.
what’s a recent work you are proud of?
[seen below]
i did a photoset with my best friend Nasir, titled 'peace and power'. it's a portrait set, and i think it illustrates me well. the hair was super fun to do, admittedly it is a lot harder working on yourself than others. Nasir and i work super well together, we will create random stuff on a whim, even this was super loose. we kind of just mess around in a space and document it. definitely one of my favorite ways to create with one of my favorite artists.
do you have any big inspirations?
yes absolutely. i love supermodels and fashion, anything solely existing for beauty. i like that concept because a lot of people would say beauty is purposeless, weak, pointless or shallow, but that's what makes it so interesting. we will never exactly know why certain things are pleasing to look at, that they give us enjoyment just from perception, but we all have that experience. beautiful things absolutely serve a purpose: to be beautiful! people, i would say myself, some of the amazing people i work with and create with, Florence Welch. oh and nature, absolutely cannot mention inspiration without nature.
why nature?
because nature is everything. it has all the answers in life, and demonstrates it. so many times inventions are completed because the inventors finally look to nature for help, airplane turbines, friction-less coatings, velcro, flight itself. all of those things are rooted in natural concepts. why wouldn't i be inspired by beauty and genius that has existed far before all of us.
what does your future look like?
uh a lot. i have done a so many things and want to do so many things. i'd say happiness or joy? more fun, more friends, more life. i invite any and all experiences. i want it all.
are you where you want to be?
short, surface answer definitely not. location wise 100% no. life and career wise, i guess yes? its difficult because i've done a lot of things maybe other artists would envy or think are super huge but to me they are a step and i would love to keep going bigger.
that’s very direct, what makes you so self assured?
well i think a lot of people my age, not just creatives, cut themselves down in the name of being 'humble', but I will not do that. humbleness is not denying yourself recognition. i have always been comfortable with giving credit to myself, i think that's really important in creative spaces. some people make art to fulfill others and for me that has never felt right. especially with the commodification of art currently. many artists lose themselves in the whirlwind of trying to appease an audience. but then you back up and look at your art and suddenly its not yours. you simply are the printer that someone else told to shoot a piece out with. so i think if anyone wants to have longevity or be successful rather, you have to give yourself the flowers you deserve. and that makes me self assured.
anything else about you?
can't wait to do more of these!

RICH IN COMMUNITY

NAMES NAMES NAMES NAMES NAMES NAMES : name / name
i feel rich when i'm with you. thank you for choosing me, thank you for letting me choose you. i have experienced so much life with you. you bring me happiness; unmeasured. i miss you. i wish you could see me now. i love you. i love you. i love you.
+ included are 79 names of people who have raised me, loved me, left me, saved me, inspired me, grown with me, mentored me, taught me, named me. written in charcoal and stained with red ink.
+ this piece is the first charcoal piece I've made in a long time. i drew with charcoal all the time as a kid and it only felt right as the medium, with its messy nature, to show the looser aspect of this work. i think many people overlook how important names can be. they represent value and soul to me. attaching a single word to a human is a daunting task, so i am beyond grateful to be knighted with many names i feel fit me.
OBJECT

often overlooked, readily used, masking tape has more possibilities than just masking off work

+ made entirely from masking tape (inside and out) this dragon sculpture is a testament to finding new uses for ordinary objects
+ it's interesting turning a two dimensional object like masking tape into something three dimensional. it somehow lets itself very well to my workflow, i work fast and messily and slowly get more and more detailed. using a blade and my fingers to rip pieces to fit in place, it almost feels like building a lego set with a vision of the finished piece in my mind.
A CHARACTER
Elk & A.vA
Elk found an old droid head buried in a forest when they were eleven. when Elk got home the decommissioned prospector droid came to life. after many confusing weeks, and much tinkering, the two became inseparable. adding more parts over the years (and of course her pink chrome) A.vA has become Elk's protector, companion, database, and teammate.
A.vA, after her reconstruction, has made it her duty to always be with Elk. she does simple things like answer Elk's questions about the world and starting campfires. also more laborious things like carrying Elk over chasms or synthesizing oxygen within her halo to allow Elk to breath under water. together they face all of life's unknown. good and bad.
[continued below]

in my head they are an adventurer of sorts, i was inspired by my childhood obsession with Pokemon. i think the idea of a young kid going out into the unknown was really refreshing and almost radical for a 'simple' game. it sticks with me, the art style, the concept, the fun. so here i created an updated avatar of sorts.
this is the sketch for Elk and A.va from my sketchbook, pardon the bleed through from the opposite page. i love bringing thoughts to bigger stages. meaning this character already existed and i decided to make a more 'official' version. while flipping through this sketchbook i fell on this and wrote a note for my future self:
character?
here is an even earlier, rudimentary sketch of A.vA
i love drawing little floating entities, often they have tiny halos or inklings of wings. as you can see she got quite a redesign in final order.
her final design became more robotic, taking reference from droids and magnets. secretly, i think A.vA is the main character here.
SPACE

here i show my creative space. aside from my head these two are the physical places i create, make, do, write, draw, process life.
i made this desk. i designed and built it to sit perfectly under my window sill. somehow within the confines of 30 x 58 inches i still cannot find enough space for every endeavor. and this backdrop is the cheapest white paper roll i could find. i wanted to show these two spaces, as i think the process of the art produced is almost as important as the art itself. you can’t have a product without a factory.
so here is my factory, two places in my childhood home. spaces i've fought to keep free. i've personalized them to fit my work. at times it feels like i need more, that i cannot make something because i don't have the space for it. however, everything passes and i've continually created in spite of feeling limited. i only hope one day that feeling will cease.
if i had limitless resources this is a project i would indulge on. the space in which i create. its the only project i truly do not have the means to create right now. i imagine a room or floor in a house. anything with large windows, access to fresh air and nature. a place that lights up during the day, where i can open windows and feel a breeze cross the entire room. tall ceilings so i don't have to be careful not to damage surfaces with 8 foot canvases. a kiln. a wall of fabrics. large tables, natural light, smooth floors. enough space to breath. room to grow in. a lot of space to think. infinite space to make.
